    Darn, Phil!

I was going to send you a similar email.  But Farida beat me to the punch!  I guess I'll stick with my (wonderful!) husband after all!

We won't be running off together after all!

I know this is kind of funny ... but, should we be concerned

about the privacy of information by receiving something like this?  I mean how does someone hack in here ... I guess anything can be hacked really. I recently got a little worried when I found out that Pete was posting links to message threads on his blog ... I know it is a public forum and I suppose this is allowed but it was a little weird to see my private posts and picture there when i thought they would be reserved for this site ... but ... any advice from others who know better about privacy issues here?   -- Cynthia

    Isn't a "privet" a hedge or something?

I think the lady needs to go back to ESL 101.  And I don't think we have to worry about hacking, Cynthia.  I think we are just seen as extra vulnerable for scamming purposes, so the scammer makes an account here and then starts fishing to see if they get any bites.  AA

I think you should email "her" back, Phil...

could be a source of much needed amusement around here.  And if anyone could take on a scammer and come out on top, I do think it would be you...AA

Phil, you say that this odd message came to you on the CSN email.  Did you check to see if the "from" person had an ID here?

Hope that our e-mails here are not being hacked.  I realize that posts can go public, but not the e-mails.

Thank you abrub for reminding me of this. Sometimes I

forget that it is a public forum. I just did not realize it was ok to copy emails or link message threads on an external blog without permission ... but it is the same thing I suppose isn't it as having them visible on the public site. -- Cynthia

    Not a lawyer, but...

It seems to me that the following part of the Terms of Service means that one cannot put emails out on the web.

    RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF USERS

    No reproduction of content

Each User agrees not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell, redistribute, exploit for any commercial purpose or publish the information provided on the American Cancer Society Web service and the American Cancer Society Cancer Survivors Network service (collectively, the “Service”) (including the underlying code that constitutes the Service), or sell, resell or redistribute any software downloaded from the Service, without obtaining the express, prior written consent of ACS. This restriction includes any attempt to incorporate the information contained in the Service into any e-mail or other "white pages" directory. Such information includes the names, e-mail addresses and other personal information provided by the Members of The Cancer Survivors Network and any other Users of the Service.

Clarification: For me it was not "private" messages that you

send it an email.  I think my choice of words implied that ... for me it was disturbing to just see my comments linked from a thread.  Some messages for others were copied and pasted to the blog.  I did not go back very far in the blog.  It was just called to my attention by another member and I checked it out.  But, no, I do not know if the official "private messages" were copied. -- Cynthia

    No Need for Concern

Date Night! Yes... It was love at first sight. Those heart shaped scars did it!

Seriously, it's easy for anyone to create accounts and send email SPAM to people. I had heard that signing up was going to be made a bit tougher by having new members fill out one of those Captcha boxes. You know, those annoying things on many websites where you have to enter the two words in the box below that are written in Aramaic or some other ancient lost language.

Many robots (little programs that SPAM people) can be blocked by those but once someone creates an account then can use a program that sends messages to many people (or just handsome rich guys) and it doesn't get any really personal information. However...that is why putting real info like our actual email addresses, street address, and/or phone numbers is frowned upon and rarely a good idea anywhere in forums. Let mail come to us via CSN's message program.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go a-courtin'

PS: MarieWLKittens, they did create an account today but as usual, no profile info was entered. I wish they would require some info like whether new members are caregivers, PWC, or some other status. I'm almost 100% sure that the emails can't be hacked unless it's by the Chinese folks who have been hacking into the Pentagon or by our own Govt.

E-mail her back and thank her for contributing to your cancer fund, in fact, everyone that got an e-mail from her e-mail back thanking her for her most generous contribution and may you have her account number and banking information so you can do an automatic transfer.
