    Thank-you
Thank-you Dog Girl for all your good advice. They did tell me to go to radiation with a full bladder.
I have finished my first week of radiation and chemo. I was very tired and had a lot of diarrhea on Friday and the weekend. I am experiencing a lot of gas, yeech. My mouth is very sore, I called my oncologist and I am waiting to hear from him. Mouth is sore and gums are bleeding. Otherwise, I feel fine,
annoying side effects, but nothing too bad.
    Sister Pretty Exhausted

    chemo mucositis - baking soda

I gargled with baking soda - 2 tsp in 4oz water - and then swallowed.....I brush with dry toothbrush dipped in baking soda and also brush my tongue....all my sores cleared up in several days. For those nasty sores on the inside of my lips which persisted, I used a lot of carmex and/or HerpecinL lip balm and kept the area moist....all sores, incl in back of tongue, cleared up as soon as chemo was complete in 4 days. Worked wonders. I also lived on Organic Kefir from Whole Foods (liquid yoghurt with lots of live cultures). Baby Oragel also numbs the area for short time if needed.

I'm doing the second round of chemo right now, along with daily radiation, and am proactively gargling with the baking soda every couple of hours...baking soda provides an alkaline environment and prevents the little buggers from infesting your mucosal membranes in your mouth...        good luck

    Hi Everybody

    Hi Everybody,

Thank-you for all the advice regarding the spots on my liver. I can't believe how fast time is flying by!!

I have not been on this site for weeks. I will update. I have been doing well until last week when I received my last chemo 5-Fluorouracil and Mitomycin. It was given Monday and by Wednesday the side effects kicked in big time unbearable pains in my stomach from heartburn, nauseated, thrush and terrible diarrhea. Still experiencing diarrhea and thrush today. I have one week left of radiation, hurray. Pretty red and sunburned in all my private areas, dread having a bowel movement, cried the other day. I also have a million freckles on my stomached is this common the end is near. Not very pleasant treatments but manageable, my heart goes out to all the older people I see undergoing treatment. I have prayer every day throughout this journey and am blessed that so far although unpleasant as Mary as said very doable. I was also blessed finding this site as all the advice and recommendations I received have been a great help. THANKS

    A&D with yoghurt for burns

I am in week 5 of radiation with second bout ofchemo - I have no redness or pain on any part of my radiation field -- after I started using A&D ointment by the bucket and organic(low protein)nonfat yoghurt in vaginal area and anus to stop burning and itching.....MDs are amazed as I should have at least a stage 2 skin breakdown at this pt in treatment.....MDAndeson pushed aquaphor as a cream but if you read the ingredients you will note that it is 43%petrolatum.....at$20/lb jar.  A&D is 15%lanolin and 53%petrolatum at $10/lb jar. You can also go 100%petrolatum (in baby section) for $3/ lb jar.....works for me and I have no pain or redness at wk5

    Two more to go!
    Hi Everyone,
Thank-you for your kind words and please keep me in your prayers. My heartburn has gone, thank goodness I did have blood work done and it was good. Feeling better except for the burns, very fatiqued but could be due to pain medication and I have no appetite or any interest in food right now.
I will try A&D ointment and yogurt as it is even painful taking dog for walk!
My Radiation will be completed on Monday!
I love your picture of your cats! We have a beautiful cat and dog. I will ask my husband how to post a picture. Before I do, you need to know my story of how I became Sister Pretty. My aunt would always tell me that my mother was the smart sister and she was the "Pretty One" I have four very close girlfriends and one day Sharon said "we are just like sisters!" and I replayed well then I am the pretty one. That day we all named each other Sharon is Sister Smart, Colleen is Sister Sexy, Cathy is Sister Sophisicated and Sharon D is Sister Posh.
I don't feel like a Sister Pretty right now, Sister Strenght is more fitting.

I'm so glad you are over the heartburn and your labs were good.  Now on to Monday for that last radiation zap!

If you use A&D, please remember that it has zinc oxide in it and may intensify the radiation burns if any remains on your skin when you have treatment.  Of course, once you are done on Monday, it should be fine--you can use any lotions, creams, etc. after that, even ones containing traces of metal.

Thanks for the explanation of how you became known as "Sister Pretty."  You must have some very special friends!

Best wishes for all to go smoothly as you finish up your treatment!

    Hi Sister Survivors !
Yesterday was my last radiation treatment!! I can't believe how fast the time flew by!
I came home yesterday from my treatment and went straight to bed, didn't wake up until 6pm.
Even though the treatments are done now the hard work of returning to normal and getting this body back into a healthy state begins. Made a big mistake yesterday after radiation treatment went to lunch and had a beautiful fruit salad and woke up with terrible stomach pains. No more fruit for me! My appetite is terrible nothing appeals to me and I usually only eat half of what is on my plate. I usually drink 6-10 cups of tea a day but recently only have two, just don't fancy it, which is very unlike me. I do have a lot to be thankful for as I have no burning when I urinate(hooray, one thing I prayed not to have) although bowel movements are extremely uncomfortable. My burns are healing nicely and Tylenol #3 very effective with the pain. Although, the itching at night is very annoying. I have appointments for CAT scan and MRI in April, as well as a follow up with the oncologist. I believe we can overcome any obstacle especially if we have faith, family and friends. I believe I am cured. I wil prayer for everyone who is on this site since my journey was a lot easier and positive with you, my friends who are all on the same journey, may all your goals come to pass.

    Congratulations!

Congratulations on having treatment all behind you!  Now you can focus on healing and strengthening your body.  I'm sorry you had the bad experience with the fruit salad, but your intestines are probably going to be "finicky" for awhile.  Your appetite will bounce back, but I suggest adding things back into your diet in small amounts in the beginning, particularly fresh fruits and veggies.  I found that cooking fruits, such as apples, pears and peaches in the microwave made them easier to tolerate.  I still prepare them that way frequently.  Add a little cinnamon and they are quite tasty!  I'm glad you have not suffered the urinary burning like I did--it was miserable.  BM's may continue to be uncomfortable for awhile, but things will gradually improve.  Patience is key with this recovery.  Hang in there, you have done great!  I hope the scans in April will give you all good news!

Congratulations! I am so glad that you are finished and are doing so well. You are so right about prayer and lots of love from family and friends. It makes all the difference!

I am wondering whether you had the opportunity to have a session or two with a cancer dietician. I am surprised you are drinking tea and tried fruit salad yesterday. You will want to avoid acidic foods for some time. Also, you will want to drink lots of water and increase your protein intake to promote healing. Some people eat meat, I was told the best cancer prevention diet is plant based. Greek yogurt is great for your digestive system. Also, to prevent the diarreah somewhat you will want to add hummus to your daily diet. I have about 1/4 cup a day. It really works to make bms less frequent and more solid. I was told to cook all vegetables to make them easier to digest.

I hope you have a speedy reecovery. Get the rest you need and take good care of yourself! You are a real trooper!

    Thanks, but scared again
Thank -you for your kind wishes, they made me feel great.
Unfortunatly, I am very scared again, for the past four days every morning I have been spitting up a small amount of blood in my spit mixed up with some mucous. I don't have a cold. My husband was upset when I told him because I said this could be a symptom of lung cancer and my cancer could spread to the lungs. He told me I am overreacting and I should br celebrating right now. I did call my oncologist and spoke to his receptionist who said maybe this is caused by dry air, but she would tell the nurse and if she was concerned she would call me back.I am scared because this is the way I found out about my anal cancer a little bit of blood, that no one was worried about. What do you think I should do? Should I insisted on a chest X-ray ,is it possible this cancer has spread to my lungs, my cancer was stage 2 my radiologist said my treatment would 90% cure me. Am I overreacting, would love some feedback.
    Thanks!

My opinion is this:  Spitting up blood is not normal and I would definitely keep on your doctor(s) to find out the cause.  However, I would doubt that this is because you have a spread of your cancer.  My way of thinking is to always be safe and not sorry, so I hope you'll get your doctor to take a look at you and get you set up for any appropriate testing.  I hope it turns out to be nothing of concern.

Hi. First of all, stay calm. Part of being a cancer survivor is learning how to deal with our fears. That being said, I would insist on an appointment with the oncologist this week. It could be anything, but being so close to treatment, you don't need to live with anxiety. They should get you in today or tomorrow at the latest. Your body can't heal if you are in a state of high anxiety and they should understand that!

Sending you good thoughts, prayers, and peaceful vibes. All will be well.

    Agreed.

It needs to be determined what's causing you to spit up blood.  It probably is nothing but you want to address it now and not later.

A&D (the zinc-free) was my preference over Aquaphor as well. The lanolin stinks a little . . .but there was a notable difference.

I am so sorry that you are having such a tough time tolerating specific foods. Introducing food back into your diet a little at time, like Martha suggested is not a bad idea at all. This is in response to Marynb's post about diet, specifically meat because it is still getting a bad rap and should not:

I was fortunate to work with a hugely reputable holisitic cancer dietician, Thaddeus Hedges, DC, out of Austin, Texas and did not avoid acidic foods  or green teas at all. Fortunately, I have been able to tolerate all food very well, so again, I do believe it depends on the person and perhaps the varying opinions and expertise of dieticians. Red meat gets a red mark ONLY because those studies were done with grain fed, hormone injected beef. GRASSfed beef has less 'bad fat' than commercial chicken (thigh) and in fact has more Omega 3 fatty acids which may reduce your cancer risk.

Of course, a diet high in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables is always recommended but grassfed red meat, whether it's beef, bison or wild game, does not have to be avoided altogether.

And 'water' is a whole other issue that deserves some research on our part. (Tap? Filtered? Spring? Distilled?)

No one person's opinion is ever the absolute correct or the only way . . . no matter what credentials they have, or don't have, following their name.  I just urge everyone to do their homework and to dance to the beat of their own drum.

    Diet
I certainly did not mean to imply that I based any decisions about what I put into my body on my own opinion. What I said was that I was told that a plant based diet was the best way to prevent cancer. I was told this at a top rated, research based, hospital that practices only evidence based medicine by a scientist. I did my own homework and have read many, many articles on diet and cancer prevention. I would not accept the opinion of anyone who didn't "have letters after their name" on what I put into my body. That is not to say that anyone with letters after their name is correct, but it is a starting place for me. I have never seen any studies at all that contradict what I was told. Of course, those associated with the sale of animals for food would not agree.

I agree that everyone should do their homework, read labels, and make choices based on evidence.

don't think I was personally attacking you at all, Marynb.  You just touched on a subject - the perils of meat consumption - that I feel is hugely misleading and inaccurate. Since having had cancer, I question everything and everyone . . .especially 'scientific studies' and yes, even top rated, research based hospitals. My message is to 'never take any information fed to us at face value.'

Here is a quick little blog spot that mirrors more of what I've read regarding red meat consumption and those 'scientific' studies. It's the first thing that popped up just then when searching for an example to share with you. A lot more supportive data is available at our fingertips.  And when researching for yourself, remember 'those associated with the sale of animals' may have the most compelling evidence because THEY are having to combat the questionable studies and have the most at, um, 'steak.' :)  (I couldn't resist, ok?!)

In closing, it is my time to say good-bye to this Board. My two + years on here have been quite a journey.  I thank those of you who offered such words of wisdom and support when I was a newbie and still so full of fear and full of myself.  It takes awhile to calm down out of the 'fight' mode and settle into the new people we become after those six weeks on the battlefield. I will be back to report the outcomes of my milestone check-ups in order to give hope to those who need it.

I especially want to thank Martha for becoming such a friend and confidante. So non-judgemental, knowledgable, reassuring and inspirational. I want to be just like Martha when I grow up! We all have something to learn from her.

Much love to all who cycle through here to share fears, tears, joy and love. May God shower His many blessings upon each of us.

Okay, you've gone and done it--I am crying!  Cry  Partly because you are leaving this board, but mostly because of the kind things you have said about me.  I am not deserving of such accolades, but nonetheless, I appreciate your sentiments more than I can say.  I treasure your friendship and any time you need to talk, you know where to reach me.  We must not lose touch with each other.

I want to thank you for adding so much to this board in the way of support, information and education about anal cancer.  You have helped me and countless others who have come here seeking information from people who will tell it like it is.  We all know this is not a pretty disease and there is much more work to be done in raising awareness.  You certainly have gone above and beyond in that regard.  You are going to be missed, but as you have promised, we expect to hear from you now and then when a celebration is in order.  I feel certain that you have beaten this disease and that you will continue getting good news.  I am not a deeply religious person, but I do believe in prayer, and you will certainly be on my prayer list.  May you always be blessed with good health and much happiness!  We'll chat again real soon!

Thank you again for being the sweet friend that you are.  Take good care.

    Angela

    Feeling Better
    Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your advice, I really value everyone's input and experiences.
I did speak with my oncologists nurse and she didn't think any of my symptoms , blood in mucous and stomach pains were connected with my treatments. After speaking with her I made an appt with my family Doctor with was very lucky because the day of my appt I went to the bathroom stood up and was dripping blood. He diagnosised me with a urinary tract infection ( I did not have any pain on urination and still don't, just a burning vaginal pain which matches my burning anal pain) I am on antibiotic but have been lying in bed for three days, feeling exhausted and in pain. Today, feeling much better up and dressed and cleaned the house. Hopefully, I am on the road to recovery and nothing else will come up.
I asked to see dietician but nurse said no, I will see a naturopath myself as I agree knowing what to eat and drink is very confusing!

    Sister...

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better. I kind of forgot until reading your post (I'm 2yrs post treatment), but I had 2 bladder infections during recovery time. I think that is not too unusual. Rest, eat what works, continue to move forward!

Thinking and praying for health to all this spring!
