Just A Random Thought

Hello All,

Just up late and thinking. I know, bad combination. LOL

On the Colon Board, we have a member who swears by TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine). Since, I am relatively new to H&N Cancer and Lung Cancer, I was wondering if any of you have any experience with TCM for these types of cancer, in conjunction with or without chemo and radiation.

I don't even know if my hubby would be interested in this, but just in case traditional treatment can't be used on him, I'm looking for an alternate plan. There seems to be very limited resources for TCM in the Phoenix area and all seem to be associated with Acupuncture and none mention treating cancer.

What are your thoughts?

Luv,

Wolfen

    Kinda touchy...

Alternative treatments, such as those in Asia, were of great interest to me on account of my C is NPC, AKA Cantonese Cancer. Someone used to post a number of things, here, in concerns to Asian ways, and they were not welcomed very much. That person, who I had a lotta respect for, was kinda unwelcomed. There are guidelines we try to stay within- accepted treatments that we know are successful, and diet and meds. That is not to suggest that alternative Asian methods will not work for you- more to say that you're probably kinda like on your own with that. Might be other forums more appropriate for what is considered as least likely to help, by the ACS, and more experimental with less documentation as successful. Can be a bit of a touch subject in these parts, Wolfen.

    I Understand Completely, Kent

The Colon Board has had many bruhahas concerning "different strokes for different folks" in the medicine area and the religious area, so I know that some subjects are sort of taboo.

I do know that even some mainstream cancer centers use a little TCM along with conventional meds, so this might be a good question for me to ask on our next visit to MDA.

    Thanks for your reply,

    Touchy Subject

I think TCM would be a great subject to bring up at your next MDA visit.  It is true that talk of "alternative" treatments has sparked some animated communications here.  I'm thinking, though, that the vast majority of us find the topic interesting as adjunctive therapy.  I mean, even discussing nutrition was like talking to a brick wall with my docs when I was in treatment - and now it's nearly considered common knowledge that nutrition seems to make a difference - both in getting and fighting cancer.

    Hi Wolfen !

Great minds think alike lol !  I was just questioning this one also.  CAM stands for complementary alternative medicine.  I will be asking today at the masonic if they offer this along with traditional tx's.  As I'm finding out more and more cancer centers are offering it.  Be careful though !  There are alot of fakes out there !  Will let you know what I find out, and if this may offer any help.  Thinking good thoughts for your family !   Katie

    ScamBuster...

I still talk to him on occasion Kent, though it's been a while....

I'm a traditional (modern medicine) treatment thinking person myself....

That being said, if traditional doesn't work, I think most of us will try anything we have access to versus nothing at all.

    Steve Jobs says NO

In a recent interview with the founder of ideao, the company Jobs used from day one to design the mouse, Mac, iphone, etc. He stated clearly that it was a mistake for him to try alternatives and if anyone had cancer go direct to western medicine. He strongly believed the time lost would have saved his life. don

We were offered TCM in our cancer center..

    Wolfen,

Dan was offered acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy. They told us at the time that many patients received help with nausea and pain, and there was a relationship with therapists who came to the center, to ensure the hospitals clean standards. You might want to ask the doctors too.. Maybe they will have other solutions that might offer some alternatives should you need them, I am surely hoping you don't.

    Yep-

I do remember that term, John, and was gonna mention it as an AKA "BS", which does not do it justice, if you know what I mean. You by chance have his email address? PM me, if you do.

    Oh jeez

Now I have two marines gunning for me.  I qualified as expert marksman though too so don't get too over confident.  59 out of 60.  The M16 was a dream to shoot.  Never shot a firearm before nor since.

    It was OK

at MDA when I had my treatment, but as a supportive aid. I had accupucture for naseau and I think it helped (but i still needed Zofran). They were also starting a study on using it for lessening mucus but I surely was not in that study.I did do some healing relaxation/meditation and they had tapes for that there too(it was hard for me to do it consistantly because I couldnt get myself motivated, but it never felt bad.everything they were using alternative therapies for seemed related to treating the side effects of treatment.I'm pretty sure some natural foods would help me get healthier but I'm still pretty limited to ensure and protien powder shakes, and they've gotten to be pretty comfortable...Ed
