Was it BS?

Just wondering what happened to the post from this morning from the "17 year old Cody" who was broke but needed to see a doctor? I hate to seem this way but I have a feeling it was a scam of some sort. I want to be wrong but something just didn't seem right. If I'm right in my thinking it's scary because someone out there will feel bad and send money to him.

    Good Question, Billie

None of us like to think that an individual would be so unfeeling as to solicit from cancer patients, but unfortunately the world is sometimes cruel. I've also heard there are "bots" that are simply a computer driven program that invades websites for sinister purposes. We get some of those on the Colon Board, but usually a member picks up on it and flags it.

If Cody was real, I hope he gets relief soon.

    Me too
I would feel terrible if I found out that he is real and needs help but my gut tells me it was fishy...

    Flagged...

I flagged the post just for the reasons mentioned, and he stating he was underage....

I too would feel bad if it was legit, but have my doubts...., way too many references to having no money, never a mention of parents, guardians, etc.... What 17yo would come to a cancer forum seeking advice versus someone in their real live...just doesn't make sense to me.

Anyways, I flagged it for the admins to take a look at it and decide if it should stay up or not.

    Gotta thank John

I think if this young person needs help I pray that CSA can help direct him.  You guys wouldn't believe the amount of what we consider still children left to fend for themselves.  Would I send them money.....no.  Would I try to direct them absolutely !  Sending prayers out for all the children out there that are on their own and feeling lost and hopeless.  I will thank John for flagging this one...and hoping the ball doesn't get dropped in case it's for real.    Katie

    Marines...

I'm not insensitive to young people..., LOL I was one back in the day. I've actually been on my own since I was 16, but it didn't take me too long to realize if I was going to make it, I needed to find resources.

    Hello Marine Corps.....

A place to stay, food to eat, and free medical...., OH..., and I got paid also. LOL, gratnted back then I made a whopping $303/month before taxes... But still, everything was paid for, all I had to do was spend that money.

Anyways, hopefully if the OP was for real, he'll find the information and resources needed...seriously doubt the truthfulness of the situation, and at worse, would really doubt a 17yo would have H&N Cancer derivied from Alcohol or Tobacco, and HPV wouldn't be a factor on someone so young I presume...

I'd just hate to see someone on here get scammed because of their caring and generosity...

    Something fishy!

On another site I read a post by a 21 yr old that was so similar to "Cody's" that I think we all were right on to smell something!!  Don't know if  it's permissible to mention other sites but a lot of you are on that site as well......check it out!

That was a smart thing to do. I too was thinking that he was too young to have gotten C from alcohol and tobacco and the fact he never mentioned his parents??? Too many iffy things there. I'll be curious what this turns out to be. I even checked out his profile and there was nothing....

Welll...I was one who responded to him...

Sorry if I offend anyone here, but I responded to him. Having young sons myself and know how at least one of them can run rapid with his mind on health problems, I felt it was real. I did not get the impression he was asking for money at all. I got that he was a very scared individual that was wondering if anyone here, who has cancer, could relate to his symptoms.

I found him to be concerned about the possibility of cancer and afraid to go to the doctor with no insurance. Again, something I can relate to because I was one of the "uninsured" people at one time that was afraid to go without having the means to pay for it.

Being 17 doesn't make you a smart individual that knows how to approach questions. But, I guess if it's not allowed on here because of his age, then so be it. I still am worried for him.

    Not Offended...

And everyone is entitled to participate....

I think we all care about people, and basically want to see the best in them. Unfortunatley that isn't always how some people see people that care about other people.

I have no idea if or if not the post was legit...

It came down to one of those feelings that you get when something just doesn't seem right. I appraently wasn't the only one that was feeling it...

I think bottom line what pretty much got the post pulled after review was the fact that it was stated they were 17.

    It states in the "Terms & Conditions";

Each User agrees that he or she is 18 years of age or older. Users under the age of 18 years agree not to use the Service.

So that in itself got the post pulled, I'm pretty sure...

I didn't respond to his post...

but that was simply because so many did, with good advice....I had nothing else to offer.  He didn't directly ask for money, just said he didn't have any and I'm thinking how many teenagers don't have money....nothing new in that.

My gut leaned more to a lonely, anxiety ridden teen....who decided to ask strangers about his symptoms rather than bring them up to a friend or parent....I've seen posts on other boards by folks (usually very young) who literally live in daily fear of getting some form of cancer....every ping and pang in their bodies prompts a thread "do I have colon cancer"...."do I have throat cancer"....."do I have pancreatic cancer".... one kid who was so persistant on a cancer board like this one with many forms of cancer discussed....was told to go see a counceler....that he needed emotional help.

He never came back tho.....hmmmmmm.... :)

I've seen some of those boards Phrannie.....

I've seen some of those boards Phrannie and I can just feel the panic in so many of their minds. And it tends to be some young ones.

I'm one who can relate somewhat because at the time my loved one was diagnosed I "freaked" and did the internet searching and it made things worse. I was so glad I came here and many reached out to me and put things into perspective (Like my buddy Skiffin...LOVE HIM!...LOL) .

I guess I was just trying to help this young man put some things in perspective and reach for some medical help.....legit or not, we will never know.

I have a son who has had chronic sinus/migraines for years and also had a pilonidal cyst that searched the internet swearing it was cancer. I guess that's why I grabbed onto this 17 yr old.

But, as John said, they are supposed to be 18, so he was at the wrong forum. Hopefully, if it is legit, he took enough advice with him to get checked out.

You and I think it was Billie were the reason I questioned that post to begin with.  You are good, caring people and I didn't want to see you or anyone else get hurt sending money.  If I remember correctly, both of you suggested that he should go to an ER and that they would treat him even if he didn't have money.  Even with those suggestions, his last post played on your good nature by saying something to the effect that he would let his pain get worse, then go to an ER but was afraid he wouldn't be able to pay.  There's not a whole lot of doubt in my mind he was hoping someone would volunteer to give him some money to pay for treatment.  No one was offended by your intentions, Cris!

    Cris,
No offense taken whatsoever. I in fact responded to his post as well advising him that he should go to the ER and not worry about the money because they can't deny him health services based on his ability to pay or not pay. What got me feeling suspicious is that no matter what people would say to him he'd come back with $$$ being the main focus. That and the fact that at 17 he already claims to have abused alcohol and smoking (I know that part could be true) but I felt as though he were using that as a way to make cancer seem more likely. When someone mentioned that at his age it would be unlikely that cancer would stem from those things he again referred to the money again. I think being married to a cop makes me always analyze anything that seems fishy. As I mentioned in another post earlier, I hope that I'm wrong about him scamming us or trying to, but I also hope he is fine and doesn't need more than antibiotics if he is indeed ailing.
You're a good caring person Cris and we don't want you to change :-)

    Gullible.....

    It's possible that I became glullible...LOL.

Kreg has told me that I could easily be another "Mother Theresa"... but, I have to watch out or I'll be taken advantage of.

Thanks for the concern folks. I hope it turns out to be just a foolish kid that has nothing wrong at all!! Laughing
