SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY UPDATE

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
I stopped by a local SS office Friday, and found out the following facts. My diagnosis will qualify my for the "compassionate clause" basically meaning I will qualify for benefits. I have to be either out of work or making less than $1,000.00 / month before I can apply for disability. presently I qualify for $2,315.00 / month, tax free, but will get a 1099 at the end of each year. There is a 5 month waiting period between once I qualify and receive my first check.

At the present time, I cannot afford to have such a dramitic cut in my annual income, and will continue to work full time either until I get let go, or the time comes where I simply cannot work any more. I feel prety good despite the side effects and will just tuff it out.

    Why a 1099 if tax free? That makes sense if there is potential tax implications. It seems as long as you can work and keep up with appointments without over-stressing your body or mind your plan seems the best tactic at present. Although still new with wrestling with this new world, I would want to maintain as normal a life as possible too. Do regular checks that "tuffing it out" is not reducing your quality of life too much.

    Also, check your state disability plan. Here in California it is quite good but not a permanent source of income.

    Mike, I think there is some confusion
    You can work a little and draw SSI. That might be where the 1099 comes in. I am on straight disability. No work. At the end of the year, I get a statement from SS but it is not for tax purposes. What I draw is not taxable so it is just like "take home pay". If you are planning on working and drawing SSI, then you would get a 1099 and there would be tax repercussions. You can't draw both SSI and SSD at the same time. After you have been on SSD, they give you what's called a right to work ticket (I think that's what it's called) to help you get back to full work gradually. With my health condition, I'll never be able to go back to work so I am on permanent disability. Hope I haven't confused the issue even more!

    John, I did not even think to look there, but will tonight before I go to bed.

    I think for now, the good news I received combined with the small amount of money I will actually get will keep me working full time for the time being. I would love to drop off lifes radar screen for 6 mos. to a year and focus on healing, battling ans fixing, but the situation "is what it is."

    John, you and the loved ones in your life please make sure you have a joyous and blessed Christmas.

    I know it is easier said then done, but if we all (patient, cargiver, family member) could just put cancer in a box, throw it up in the attic, and forget and do not give cancer the ability to ruin Christmas, that is my Christmas with for all of us. Belive me, Cancer will be ready to come down from the attic, jump out of the box and let us all know he is back.

    I truly appreciate you quarterbacking all of us into the endzone of life. You have always put your best foot forward steering the H&N bus down the road.

    If nothing else, I have a pretty good memory retention, usually if I have seen it (and read it, LOL)..., I can remember that I at least seen it.

    So a lot of times if I see something in a post, I can recall seeing it before.

    Now finding it again is a totally nother story, LOL.
