Low-dose aspirin daily...

in Kidney Cancer #1
Given that aspirin is an NSAID... those of us with one remaining kidney should technically avoid it however I was told by my specialist to take one daily (81 mg) in order to prevent heart disease. It has also been shown, at least in a few studies, to have some cancer benefit. Does anyone else here take an aspirin a day and do you feel that the benefits outweigh the potential risks? Thanks much for any input, as I am on the fence about this. Jim

    My clinical trial is very strict re: which drugs I can and cannot take. Including nsaids. However a daily ASA 81mg. has not been an issue. The dose is low enough that the benefit it can provide as an anti-inflammatory is minimal and the benefit it provides as an anti-coagulant is significant.

    Good info Fox - I was guessing along those lines but it's good to have that supposition confirmed.

    Docs told me very specifically to avoid all nsaids EXCEPT for low dose asprin for pretty much the same reasons.

    My doctor has had me on 81mg aspirin since my diagnosis Oct. 2011.Plus he recommended I take it while on my trial for pazopanib/votrient

    No dose
    And my onc wanted me off the 81 mg aspirin when I started my trial!

    Well, Peg and John, we're all different and that goes for both patients and doctors but the key difference here might be the very different drugs involved in your respective trials? Let's hope the recommendations are right in each of your situations.

    I remember when that article came out. Pretty interesting. (Oh the things they'll discover five years from now! Hope we're all around to reap the benefits.) Since I was on no other medications at the time, it was decided to start my trial with a clean slate and wait fo see how my body acclimated to the two drugs in the trial before adding anything else. Been 17 weeks - maybe time to bring up 81 mg again.
