It doesn't go on and on
The pain really is over in 15-30 seconds. After that, it just feels a little sore. It was a LOT less pain for me than when I had it inserted. It sounds like it didn't hurt at all for some people, so what I'm telling you is probably the extreme case. That means the extreme case is a sharp pinch then about 15 seconds of stinging. :-)

    Absolutely correct......
I believe the sensation lasted maybe 15 seconds. This is very minor after all you've been through. At this point in time, we are all way too tough to worry about taking the tube out. It's just an "ouch".

    Tube removal
Congratulations on getting your tube removed. I remember being concerned when I had mine out and wasn't sure what the procedure was like. Well, it took 2 seconds and I didn't feel anything. The doc just yanked that sucker out and it didn't hurt at all. I had no idea it was that easy. No problems after either other than the fact that I now have what looks like 2 belly buttons - but I can live with that. I'm sure everyone is different, but I wouldn't worry about it - truly a piece of cake compared to everything else you've probably gone through. It is so nice to be able to wear anything you want again (except maybe a bikini!) Good luck and happy eating.

    PEG Removal
They brought in the head grounds keeper at KU Med to tie a log chain on to one end of the tube and ran it out to a delivery truck and chained it to the bumper. They gave me a leather glove to bite on, gunned the the delivery truck's motor and dumped the clutch. I didn't notice any pain with the tube coming out, but the road rash and broken bones from being dragged down the street for six blocks took several months to heal.

OK.... OK.... isn't quite like that.... I was lying on a table, the nurse deflated the internal end and it slipped right out. Took about 1/2 to 1 second to accomplish. No pain, no fuss and they put a small bandage on the tube site and sent me home.

    It was pretty anticlimactic.

LOL Rush.....that makes for a darn good story.....ha!
    I'm still smiling.

I think I lost the ability to wear a bikini back in my forties, so no worry about my wardrobe changing much. I'll just be glad not having to tuck it into places, or worrying that the puppy is going to grab it on those occasions when it slips out....generally when I'm trying to get dressed around a very curious dog. More than a few times she has tried to be the one who gets to yank it out.

    Just like Laralyn says
My PEG removal was almost identical to hers. I'm not going to lie, I was nervous that it was really going to hurt but I was surprised (and happy) that it wasn't near as bad as I was expecting it to be. It was tender for a few days, much like when it was placed but after all we've been thru, piece of cake!
Try not to stress about it, it's much easier than you are imagining.
Best of all, you will feel so much more normal after it is out. I swear, I literally felt normal for the first time in a long time after that thing was removed. It was instantly for me.

Mine was the kind with the mushroom on the end. I was hoping for the plain tube but it was not so. Anyway, it hurt like hell for about 35 seconds then I was fine. Being groggy from the anesthesia is way worse.

    You can do this Phrannie!
I think I was an exception here. My gastro doc was female, and she had to give a really long slow hard pull. No yanking there. I had some kind of muscle spasm and just lay there gasping and squeaking for what seemed like two minutes before it abated and I could breathe. After that I was fine. No after effects at all.

I had the kind of PEG with a large mushroom-shaped flare at the end. It looked HUGE.

    Deb

i had the same kind. my doc
i had the same kind. my doc yanked it out and then stuck it right in my face and said "see?". not too sure why he thought i wanted to see. anyway, he had a pretty good arm.

    de-PEGging
Phrannie- not that big of a deal. I got no anesthetics, or anything. Doc just had me lay on the table, spun it around lightly for some 30-seconds to free-up, then YANKED it out. You know what mine looked like if you check-out my Expressions page pictures, so I also had the G-tube mushroom variety. Only felt it the seconds it took him to get it out- AND WHAT I FELT IS NOTHING IN THE BIG SCOPE OF THINGS. Just a little discomfort, Phrannie, and all you gotta do is think about how glad you are to get rid of it. Just one more little itty-bitty pebble in the road.

Oh, and by the way- CONGRATULATIONS, girl.

    not all that bad
considering everything involved, I was prepared for some pretty good pain, but I was amazed to find that it hardly hurt at all! The dr did his prep with some chux pads and some gauze, he simply put his fingers around the base of the tube, and a quick pull had it pop right out! I made a pretty good pop too, and there was some minor bleeding, but it soon stopped. I had mine out three weeks ago today and the stoma has completely closed, has no pain, though it looks a bit nasty. My wife does not like to see it so I've taken to wearing a band-aid over it until the scar tissue fades and the hair grows back in.

On the one hand, I now have two navels, on the other I can almost claim to have been shot in the gut by a .22!

It's a breeze, take a Tylenol before hand if you like, but you really won't need it.

    Like all the others ...
No big deal Phrannie ...bee sting is about correct, if that! They pulled mine out in 2 secnonds, a little sting and bandage and I was off. My tube got infected two times and that was worse than the "yanking out" ... :)

    Love Rush's story!! Too funny.

    Best,

    "Belly button North"
My wife calls my PEG scar my "Belly button North." And yes, Phrannie, I can no longer wear a bikini in public without being totally self-conscious ;)

Given what you've gone through to get to the point of having your tube removed, the removal itself will be a non-event.

Sorry i can't relate but you're in prayer.
I did have a JP drain from my surgery put in and when they pulled it, it stung for about 15-20 sec and that was it. It looked like a foot long tape worm.
If it's anything like that?....you should be fine. Like another member said, so much that you have been through, this should be a walk in the park : )

Well...I figure that when I started treatment
after reading about what it was going to be like, I was pretty scared...but I made it thru that, and now just remember that it wasn't fun...tho the particulars are a tad blurry. So this will be wish-bang-over...and by the next day the memory of that will be blurry too. Mother Nature is good at burying the details of unpleasant things.

    It's out....it's out....it's OUT!!!
So not too bad, I didn't even cuss or anything. You guys were right...about 30 seconds that brought a tear to my eye, 5 minutes with cramping...and voila! It was over and done with, and I don't have to figure out where to keep it for the day. No more of it getting loose and hubby laying on it...and no more puppy always wrangling to get a hold of it...I am free! :)

    What a relief!
I'm so happy for you! I swear I instantly felt normal again after i was free of that dang thing. Now don't be alarmed if tomorrow and the next day it's a bit tender, it's very common for that to happen.
    So thrilled for you!
