    Questions
    John,

When my ENT told me, I said “HPV what”. I still am not sure that the crap can still haunt my body. I guess I am just not up to the brainiac level to understand how HPV and cancer joined forces to screw me up. I understand a dormant virus, but what compromised my immune system to let this invader setup shop? What prevents it from happening again?

    Best,

    Matt

I am sorry I steered your thread down this road

    They're heeeeere!
    Hey Matt,
How 'ya doin', buddy? Several types of HPVs are capable of inducing changes in their host cell DNA that result in unregulated cell growth (= cancer). It is for this very reason that it is suggested that women get PAP smears that test for the presence of these viruses on a fairly regular basis. In women these viruses (the nasty cancer-causing ones) can cause uterine and/or cervical cancers. In men they can cause what we both have had to deal with.I hope that you're doing well, by the way!
Dude, if you knew how many pathogens (i.e., disease-causing viruses and bacteria) we are exposed to out there on a daily basis, you would never leave the house! :)! Trust me, they outnumber us by many, MANY orders of magnitude. Thankfully, however, we have our ever- vigilant normal flora (and our immune systems)to take care of many of them before they do any harm. Did you check out the web-site? :)!
    Take Care,
    Paul

    Life Changing...
Joan, yes it is life changing and you always will be aware....but.

Please know, that after three plus years, my life is pretty much back to the old normal...

So yes, I did have a "new normal" for awhile, now my "new normal", is my "old normal", only with a few battle scars.

Just know that you guys will get through this and that the very large majority actually come out pretty unscathed...eventually.

It's a long hard battle, and takes forever it seems to get back to some sense of normality...

LOL, which in my case tends to be more on the side of "Abi-Normal"....

So maybe being a little off to begin with is good in this case, LOL...

    Thoughts and Prayers....
    John

    precancer
I have just been diagnosed with mild to moderate dysplasia. The doctor told me to wait for a year and have another hpv test done. This scares me to wait that long. Do you know if there is any treatment that should be done for precancer cells?

    All Good Points...
I think this has been a good discussion...definitely more research is needed, especially concerning testing and prevention.

Media recognition is definitely a step in the right direction as for knowledge and getting the word out.

    HPV
Concerning HPV, I was of the why ask why school of thought.
The only thing I took from it was that my odds of beating the cancer were better since it was of an HPV origin.
I remember people asking me early on how I had gotten it and I just remember thinking I don't care, I am moving forward into beat it mode.
I totaly get why some people want to dig into the research and find out as much as they can about what particular HPV strains cause this or that BUT I am not wired that way.
I did learn a thing or two and I plan on getting my son the shot soon.

    Area Specific
But I think from my understanding the tissue would have to be area specific...

You mention anal swabs, at best I'd presume that would only indicate HPV in those tissues...still not cancer, though potential.

I don't know the relationship to HPV in DNA and the rest of the body. Apparently there is nothing that shows it.

For me, I had tonsils that were infected apparently. But it doesn't show everywhere in the body that I'm aware. Only in that infected tissue of the tonsils.

Now I have heard that there is supposedly some swabs or testing oral via the Dentist for oral cancer, and have heard reference to that connected to determining HPV.

Just the bad part of it....

Even if you do show HPV, then what....

Of the 80 - 90%+ of the general population that have had it or do have it.... Only 10% or less ever developes into cancer. The other 80 - 90% never get cancer, and that's with no intervention.

    new HPV test for men
let's hope HPV testing for the throat is coming down the pike.

    http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/10/prweb9973020.htm

"Progressive Health Services is now providing a new HPV test for men in San Diego as part of a research study. The test, an HPV DNA test which looks for HPV of the penis, is being offered in the context of a research study to help identify HPV in men."
    .
    .
"Progressive Health Services, who has been providing comprehensive STD testing and treatment for men and women for over 35 years, cites previously published research studies demonstrating that HPV can, indeed, be identified via DNA testing from the urethral opening of the penis."
    .
    .
"Progressive Health Services clinical director Suzann Gage, OB/GYN nurse practitioner and licensed acupuncturist, notes that research linking HPV to cervical cancer prompted FDA approval for HPV DNA testing in women via Pap smears. “Men have been asking us for HPV testing for years. We feel it is important for us to conduct our own male HPV DNA research to help shed more light on HPV in men.”
Progressive Health Services currently provides FDA approved HPV DNA testing of the throat, anus and cervix, as well as HPV DNA testing of the penis as research, at their offices in San Diego, California."
