Well, had onc. appt. he said there is an ever so slight increase again...so he feels xeloda is not working out, so it's back to folfiri for me....he talking about adding avastin, there is an added risk for me because of my history of the blood clots...he wants to talk it over with his colleagues....so, basically I left not knowing when to start...sounded like next week. If he's gonna give me a try with the avastin he said to start it now too, but it was left up in the air. Personally I wanna try throwing something more at it. So, hoping the avastin is thrown in.

    feel your pain
Hey Smokey, sorry its not working for you, hope the new/addition stuff will work our better. I feel your frustration with leaving the Dr. not really nowing which way they are going to go. It is good that he is going to talk with other Dr. and get there opionion of your situation. I am new to this hole cancer thing but i still now what its like leaving the onc. not really feeling that we resolved much. I have had scan after scan after biopsy just trying to figure out what and where my cancer is at. but i think we finally got a plan down:) I truly hope the changes your Onc. is making makes a difference for you.

    I di folfiri plus avastin
I di folfiri plus avastin after my first recurrence even with a history of blood clots. They put me on coumadin to reduce th risks. Plus i told them i am very in tune to the symptoms and would go to the hospital at the first sign of a clot which i did all three times.

Man 2 years of lovinox is brutal. I only had to do that for the first 2 weeks after each clot. I hate the burn from those shots.

I'm sorry to read of another twist in the path for you,
Smokey Joe...I know a lot of people have had great results with Avastin, so I hope this works out well for you. I wonder if Zaltrap would be another option, as it's similar to Avastin, from what I've read. A FB friend is getting good results with that at the moment. Hugs and strength~Ann

So, got the call, start next
So, got the call, start next week, including avastin....makes me happy (worried but happy). Oncologist brought it up, then after I asked him some questions, he almost started to seem to hesitate and question whether it was a good idea or not. I'm looking for a better response than folfiri alone.....hopefully this will curb things...

No that was it and I am not
No that was it and I am not sure if the Avastin caused it. I didn't have any blood clots when I did Avastin back in 06. I had 2 blood clots in 07/08 when I started Avastin again. One was areound my PICC line. They took that out and put in a port. That clot was so bad I was in the hospital for a week on drip IV Heparin and had 2 angioplasties in my arm. That second one was in January 08. I didnt have another blood clot until this year after I started treatment again. This time it was in my leg and I wasnt even taking Avastin. I was doing FOLFIRI plus Vectibix.

2 doctors told me the cancer itself can cause it. I researched it and found truth in what they were saying. However I have only had clots when I was in treatment after a tumor was removed. I didnt have any clots for the past 4 years leading up to my last recurrence which reulted in a massive liver tumor. They took my whole right lobe, started me on treatment and BAM 2 months later I had another clot. So I researched Irrinotecan and 5FU and found out sometimes clots can develop as a side effect of the drug. I have been done with treatment and Coumadin again for over three months with no problems.

My opinion is the Avastin didnt give me any clots although it theory it could have contributed to the formation of a clot but it was around catheter lines.

    Hope that helps.

    my avastin plan
If we come to a point that IV C + cimetidine with oral chemo maintenance is not adequate for VEGF control, we may maintain that and add half lowest dose avastin. Our larger concern is maintaining "instant resectability" for targeted operations within 1-2 weeks short notice.
