Cancer hero's

I haven't started a new post in a while but there are 2 individuals on here who have really been on my mind. Not that everyone on here isn't on my mind and in my prayers but these two people have really inspired me. It is hard to inspire me these days after fighting for 7 years.

Before I was diagnosed I thought all cancer survivors were heros.I have had several friends and family members tell me that I am inspiration to them which I am sure that most of you have heard that one time or another.

Now there are two people on here that have done things that are absolutely asounding to me and I have to say that they are hero's of mine evan after the 4 surgeries, 3 DVT's, and 34 rounds of chemo that I have endured.

Steved has still got my head spinning with the decision he made to go through with such a life changing in radical surgery. I don't know if I could do that.

Jeff (SteveandNat) has me amazed as well when he decided to do 8 weeks straight of 5FU. It makes me shutter when I think about having that bag hooked to me for 8 weeks. I can barely handle 3 days.

You guys are awesome and thank you.

P.S. I hope it is ok to name names on here.

    Agreed.
We all struggle, but some do seem to go above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak. A lot of courage on this board, and Steve and Jeff are exemplars for all of us.

    DITTO!
I'm new and just beginning to fill in on some of the backgrounds of folks here. As a caregiver to a fella who will NEVER be on the Internet (LOL), you're all heroes to me for making me think of things that need to be thought of - ask questions I wouldn't have thought of - and just generally inspire me to inspire my guy.

That being said, the two above-named people get extra stars!!

    Agreed...but I'd add you to
Agreed...but I'd add you to that list Janderson along with Craig Ron Phil Maglets John and others that I'm sure I'm forgetting. The fact that you share your stories of hope and success mean more than you know. The first few days after diagnosis I copied and pasted many of your posts into emails to my husband to show him there is hope even when the docs don't make it look so good. My times of greatest anxiety I come here to read more posts to calm me down. In addition to those folks I am amazed by so many of the others here like Pete and Tara and Anna and Doc and.........who keep plugging away after being knocked down. It's amazing that you are all so willing to share after being through so much.

    TO me sharing my experience
TO me sharing my experience is like AA (alcaholics anonymous ) or any 12 step program. My first wife was an alcoholic so i am very familiar with AA. part of the healing process is to use your experience to help others. Using my cancer experience to help others helps me as well. It gives me a sense of purpose for getting cancer.

    Thanks so much
Your comments are very powerful. All of us are hero's because we have to make hard decisions with our fight with this crazy cancer. Sometimes I wonder what keeps us going...the answer always comes back to wanting more life. My family means so much and they help me battle this so we can celebrate birthdays holidays and so many little events. We appreciate life so much more now. Thanks again you too are my hero. Jeff

    Heros, bravery etc
Thank you for the kind words which come at a time when I need a bit of boost to get through. I am so pleased my story helps others and accept I have faced some massive challenges but have to say I remain uncomfortable with words like hero and bravery. I would give anything not to have been faced with the choices I have and simply see myself as making decisions that are right for me and my family. Would it have been less brave to not have surgery and face a terminal illness with dignity and pride. Some of the more remarkable decisions I have witnessed on this board have been about declining or stopping treatments when people have known that is the right decision for them.

I have always struggled with people saying this kind of stuff which I am sure you have all experienced-the person saying 'you are so brave' when you don't feel it and in fact feel terrified and desperate to run away from it all. We all simply face this illness as the person we have always been, each just trying to stay alive to eeke out a bit more pleasure and enjoyment from life.

I hope no one interprets this as rude or ungrateful- simply my take from my hospital bed tonight. In truth if my story helps others I am proud of that but it doesn't make me a hero.

    A quote from Nelson Mandela...
that helps put things into perspective for me...
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
And I would add "brave woman" as well!
We all conquer fear each step of the way on this cancer journey and I salute you all! Ann Alexandria

    heros
In some respects we are all heros! No one but us knows what we went through to get where we are today. Hopefully we are giving back to the future cancer dxed ones. Giving them hope and encouragement. Good Luck to us all!!!

EVERYONE here is a HERO. I am glad I found all of you on this site. I wish you didn't have to be here, I wish I didn't have to be here. But the support here is amazing and inspiring.

    This board
makes me cry, makes me laugh, and inspires me. When I feel sorry for myself, you folks pick me up -- especially you Steve. This is really the only place I can go to be among people that truly understand this journey. You're all heros to me. Dan

You are all so right. No one
You are all so right. No one can fully understand what we have been through and continue to go through every day of our lives weather in treatment or not. Even my loving wife who has been with me every step of the way and has suffered greatly as well doesnt fully understand. I came to the conclusion that even if i am cured one day in the physical sense that cancer will still be with me mentaly and emotionaly. We are all HEROS. This is something we will always have to deal with.

But the gift is this experience should teach us all to live in the moment and truly appreciate life and our loved ones.
