    TPN?
Hey Ann, no I don't think I've ever heard of TPN, what is it? I can eat, it's just that I have to force it down. Even then, the best I can manage is half of what's on the plate.

Lu is definitely the darling of the floor. Even as shy as she is, she still manages to charm the staff, man and woman alike. If she wasn't so shy, I'd offer to take her around to visit other patients.

I haven't read the first two books you mentioned, but I have read 1776. My primary focus in History as been the American Civil War and my secondary is East Asian Studies. I'm fascinated by the Japanese and Chinese cultures. I'm currently reading The Pillow Book, a Japanese book that was written in the late 10th early 11th century which pre-dates Chaucer and is a possible contemporary of "Beowulf".

I'll bet the staff loves having her there!
Pets really do brighten things up a bit! I'm not sure what TPN stands for, but it's basically IV feeding. You can still try to eat food by mouth but it will give you supplemental calories if you need them. I haven't heard of the Pillow Book...I majored in medieval history but the focus was on western Europe. I really should learn more about the history of Asian cultures. It's a big hole in my education. If you like American history, I would definitely suggest trying "Devil in the White City"...it's the story of the Chicago World's Fair, the man who created it, and a serial killer who happened to be active in the city at the same time, and took advantage of it. It's a pretty amazing conjunction of events and gives you a great sense of life in a late 19th century American city. Ok, taking off my librarian's hat now...I just realized you have an update, need to go see how you're doing!

    TPN
Total Parenental Nutrition - usually given to patients not eating at all. The Drs would rather you eat food than to start that and not eat.

    Update
Well, I did a bit better on Sunday. The lung doc came in and reported that the x-rays yesterday showed improvement. He ordered a dose of Lasix, which of course turned me into the proverbial race horse! (Actually filled a 32 oz urinal in one try.)

I had a lot of visitors today but still managed to get up and sit by the window to read for a little bit. That was very relaxing and I'm going to have to try to get an hour a day doing so.

Later, in the early evening, my fever began to spike again, hitting a high of 101.7 F (38.7 C) and the coughing just wouldn't stop. The nurses were really busting their butts to get it under control and it finally did. The congestion is getting a little better and I'm currently on 5 liters of oxygen all of the time. I think in a little bit, I'm going to have one of the nurses walk with me and monitor my O2 level with and without the air tank. Funny thing is I've said for years I love to suck air out of a can, but I meant while under water!

That's about it for now. I have to wait until Tuesday when my onc comes in to see if I'm getting chemo this week. The floor I'm on is their Oncology Ward, so I can get it here.

Hugs to all and thank you very much for the prayers and thoughts.

    Hugs,

    Ray/Doc

Jumping around here a bit in my responses...
I'm glad you're feeling a little better and getting a chance to read, but you've gotta do something about that fever! Keeping you in my thoughts and sending strength and healing your way-Ann

Feeling not as well today. Definitely rasping in the lungs and they brought in a spirometer for after my breathing treatment. I failed miserably. She wanted me to get to 1500 on it and I didn't even hit 700. Already burning a low fever and room service messed up my breakfast! Ask for strawberry yogurt and chocolate boost, got peach yogurt and strawberry boost. C'est la guerre.

Shortly after I posted this, I started to feel pretty bad and my temp jumped to 101.7 and stayed there for a couple of hours. They finally knocked it down with Tylenol. I'm feeling pretty drained, but otherwise okay.

Hoping you are feeling better and they have that temp. under control. I was gonna suggest you ask for stuff that is not on the menu....I found I could ask for things like V8 veg. juice even though they didn't offer it on the menu choices (sometimes they can accomodate, you won't know till you ask). After surgery was done I knew veg. juice would get my bowels doing something. Ya don't want TPN, I was on that for several weeks because I had a tumor completely blocking my bowel, so I couldn't eat...no one wanted to do surgery because I had blood clots in my lungs.....getting fed through a tube that ran into a PICC line in my upper arm was not fun. Is Lulu still with you, or did she break out of the big house for a bit??

    Prayers of healing
Doc, sending prayers of healing and good thoughts of comfort for you as you kick this Pneumonia. I agree with others that the fever is concerning. Hearing that the nurses are working hard to help and you have Lulu with you is good news. Get Well and Get Back Home soon, Art

    Low grade fever
I'm still running a little hot, in the 99 range where my normal is about 97.5 give or take a few. Today I just can't seem to stay awake. Normally I'm a light sleeper, but the nurses were able to disconnect me from the pump without waking me.

After breakfast and shower, I took Lu out for a walk, with assistance of course, and we went up and around the building to the pond they have, then back in through the cafeteria. It was certainly an ambitious venture, but when we got back my oxygen absorption level was the same as when we left.

The onc came in this morning and said no chemo while in the hospital, so I won't have treatment this week. They don't want to over stress the system. One way that I can tell I'm not strong enough to go home yet is because I don't have the strength to flirt with the nurses.

Thanks for all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes and know that they're going back to everyone in kind!
