Not Home Yet Perforated Bowel and Chemo

Hi all: Just released from 3 months in the hospital following an emergency
trip to hospital with a perforated bowel. Was on life support for two
weeks and came to paralyzed from the nose down. Has taken awhile but
I can now walk with a walker and move most of my "bits". I'm sure that
the perforation resulted from the folfirinox chemo treatments I have
had. Anyone know of others that this happened to?

    Cheryl, we've missed you!
Were you on Avastin? One of the known side effects of Avastin is possibility of bowel perf. I hadn't heard of it as a side effect of folfirinox.

    Wishing you a smooth recovery.

    Almost Home
Thanks all - really appreciate your thoughts. I was on oxaliplatin + irenotecan +
5FU infused every 2 weeks. I think perforated bowels are a rare but known
side effect - lucky me! I see the oncologist tomorrow so we'll see where we
go from here, hopefully not more chemo as I don't want to repeat my hospital
sojourn. But things are coming along - can sort of walk without the walker but
am scared to go very far as my balance is still not good. My hands are stiff and
full of neuropathy (another oxi side effect).

    Cheryl:
I was wondering where you were. Ouch, you sure have been through some tough stuff but you are on the road to recovery and that is good. Best wishes for a continued successful recovery. Again, Ouch.

    perforated bowel
I had a dx of sacral cancer and fortunately, it turned out to be a chronic infection from a perforated bowel. Boy can that mess you up. Mine was the result of the accumulated effects of chemo and radiation.

Glad to hear things are improving and you are out of the hospital. Just keep moving forward!

    peace

    Perforated Bowels
Yup, not fun! My oncologist doesn't really believe that the harsh chemo (I was on folfirinox) contributed but I know better - too many of us have ended up with perforated bowels. Luckily we survived! I'm going to read your other post on travelling with a bag!
