Hi
My friend is undergoing of hemodialysis for acute renal failure.the begining of renal failure was after the third cycle of chemotherapy with oxaliplatin and xeloda.
Has anyone had renal failure due to oxaliplatin?

Not renal failure - but renal damage.

The metals in the oxy can do a number on any organ that we have.

And for Irinotecan, the white paper pamphlet that comes with the drug states clearly that prolonged use of this chemo drug can renal damage.

I know of few who have had this...I have suffered damage, no doubt about it.

So, yes there is always the possibility of that happening. I'm sorry for your friend and I know this was becoming a big quality of life issue for me when I was doing chemo again last year. While I was on the drug was particularly hard and at times, embarassing.

Daisy - I was hoping I could be of help here, but either my doctors never advised me on any of this, or I'm just not doing the right thing.

- I've never been told about this, so I've never done it.

Did your recovery from renal damage take a lot of time?how many days or months?
- It's never completely healed. I live with the damage that has been done. After chemo
ened, it got better over the next six-months to where urination was better with a
stronger stream, but there are times when you think you're peeing in the bowl, and then
find out that all you did was pee all over yourself.

Position is the key...if standing upright, it's almost certain it won't go well. So, you
have to step back and fall into the wall and put yourself at a 45 degree angle so that
things are heading south in the right direction.

What medications did your nephrologist prescribe you?
- I've never seen one.

What diet did your dietition advise you?
- I have not seen one since I was first diagnosed. The told me the same company lines.
Eat fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water.

I just checked my last blood records...

BUN = 11 (6-23)

CREATINE = 0.77 (0.67-1.17)

Neither of the oncologists I've had ever had any concern for this. What was scaring me so bad last year, was that you had to urinate so bad, that you'd think you'd peel the porcelain....and things would just drip or leak, instead of streaming...and it would end up on you - and then trying to hide it when it was so visibly prominent.

Alot of times with young girl nurses...it was just upsetting and very embarassing.

I didn't want to be on a permanent in-line catheter for the rest of my life, so this was a concern of mine - the one fear that I held.

I'm sorry I have not been of more help to you and your friend. I was willing to try and see what questions you had - and if I could answer any of them.

The one thing I know, is that renal damage does not seem to be recoverable, at least not by much. My troubles will probably continue - may worsen with time even if I never do chemo again.

Were I to do it again, I would surely suffer even further from its effects.
