Pet scans show all types of inflammation and infections. I completed tx for anal cancer on 6-30-09, and had a lobectomy on my lower right lobe on 9-23-10. The 2 cancers are not related because no hpv was found in the lung cancer. I was fortunate that the lung cancer was found early and very curable. I was a 35 year smoker and quit on 5-4-09. The only way to tell if its cancer is to have a biopsy. I hope it is just inflammation and that will be all. I wish you well. Lori

One another thing is I was just recently ct scanned for the lung, because a 5mm lung nodule had been found on my previous ct scan in Jan. This was found on my lower left lobe. So the procedure is when they are so small is to rescan in 3 months to see if they have grown, well I had the rescan on 4-23-12 and the lung nodule had disappeared. I had a cold a week previous to the ct scan in Jan. and my ocologist said I wish you had told me because I would have put the scan off. These pet and ct scans pick up everything.

I am 53 and lung nodules show up in people 50 and over all the time. Smokers are also more likely to have lung nodules. All nodules are not cancer, I have nodules that have been there and not changed since my very 1st pet scan for diagnosing the anal cancer.

I know its hard not to worry, but one thing is if it were anything it would have been caught very early and very curable.

    I wish you well. Lori

    Shirley--
All my scans, both PET and CT's, have shown granulomas in my lungs, which are calcified, meaning old. They are caused by histoplasmosis, which you get from breathing in spores that live in the soil that are released into the air when soil is cultivated. Perhaps this is what's going on with you. My docs have all assured me it's common in people who live or have lived in agricultural areas--I grew up in the Midwest surrounded by farmland. This and many other things, including inflammation and infection can show up on a scan and do not mean cancer. I am thinking all positive thoughts for you and hope that the bronchoscopy will show this is nothing of concern.

    Getting good care
Getting good care comes at a price. Sometimes the price of too much information. I had a spot on my lung in my first scan also which, according to my Oncologist, no less than three Docs at Sloan reviewed before concurring that it was just inflammation. I think it is good you are getting the biopsy done. It is hard not to worry about this stuff and even the tests. Arrrghhh! That said, in my "gut" (ha, ha, rhymes with "butt":-) feel you will be okay when all is revealed. Nonetheless, you are on my radar and in my prayers.

    Hi Shirley--
I'm glad you are feeling better. My hope is that your follow-up on the lung issue will prove to be good news. I grew up in the midwest, as I said, and lived in Indiana for almost 12 years, so I'm sure my lungs have had lots of exposure to the spores that cause histoplasmosis, even though I've never had any lung issues, such as difficulty breathing. I'm sorry to hear about your teeth. I hope the dentures will work out great for you.
