Sore throat

in Esophageal Cancer #1
I'm back with another question. I am 1year out from my surgery and still panic with every little pain. I have been doing ok lately until my throat became sore. I went to my primary dr and he said it was nothing, maybe some sinus drainage. I was wondering if anyone else experienced a sore throat. Do you think the cancer could have spread to my throat? My 3 month check up isn't until the 25th and my husband and I are planning an out west trip, I hate to go on this trip with this hanging over my head. Any thoughts? Also, my sister is currently receiving treatment for throat cancer, think it is all in my head? I know I must sound like a looney but really I'm not. Thanks for listening.

    If your primary care doctor looked and didn't see a reason for it to be sore, I would have it checked out. I'm not sure where you live, but the pollen count is so high here right now, it could be from allergies.

    I totally get where you're coming from on the panic with every little pain. Once you have been diagnosed with cancer, I think that it is only natural to be suspicious of every little pain. One reason is that you are probably way more in tune to your body than you ever were.

    Hoping it goes away on it's own and is just a seasonal sore throat and you can go on your trip worry free and enjoy the time away.

    Congratulations on being one year out from surgery and again, we will pray that the sore throat is noting to worry over.

    I live in Michigan, Flint area. I was wondering about the care you got at U of M? I have heard good things. I had Dr Silver for my surgery and think he is wonderful. I had a smooth recovery and no pain, I was in the hospital 8 days. The reason I would like to know about your experience is my Oncology dr has said he has done all that can be done if it shows back up there is no more to be done. I'm thinking of a2nd opinion of course and like the idea of UofM, they are close by.

    As a survivor, I can certainly identify with the concern over new pains. I think we all live with that on a daily basis. I assume when you saw your primary care physician he checked for swollen lymph nodes or other signs of recurrence. This is certainly the time of year for allergies in the area where you live. I live in McCormick, South Carolina in the winter, but I live in Grand Blanc, Michigan in the summer; so I am familiar with the weather in that area. This time of the year there are lots of significant temperature swings and lots of pollen so it really could be allergies.

    As for treatment at University of Michigan I have heard nothing but good things about the cancer center there.

    I would say if it doesn't resolve itself in a week or so I would contact your oncologist and at least have a telephone conversation about your symptoms and see if he wants you to come in for more evaluation.

    Thanks for all the insight. I seen my Oncologist today and I'm having a scope on Tuesday. I feel a little better, He thought it was unlikely it was throat cancer because of the kind of EC I had. So, I'm hoping for a good report on Tuesday, At least that Dr will talk to us then and not have to wait for results.

    Hi Judy!

    We have nothing but praise for UofM - our experience with the surgeon, his staff and the nurses were good.

    We were told originally by the rad onc that Don had the max amount of radiation. But now they are re-thinking that and between WMCC and UofM - we'll see what they come up with. We do know that chemo in Don's situation is not an option, yet.

    I don't know what they're going to do but I can let you know after we see Dr. Hayman at Univ of Mich on the 9th and then we go back to the radiation onc at WMCC on the 11th. I would imagine we are going to have to decide whether or not the risk outweighs the possible benefits of having radiation again in the same area.

    I truly hope your sore throat is from allergies or some mild infection and goes away before you go to the doctor. It is so hard to imagine and know that once you have this diagnosis, each time there is an ache or pain your mind automatically goes into panic mode. I am complaining tonight because I ache from sitting on the lawn mower for hours and I forget how minor this seems to my husband just now as I am writing this to you. I'm sure he would be happy to be able to complain of a few aches from mowing the lawn.

    Sure wish they could come up with something definitive on the cause of this cancer and thus, some true preventatives.
