Teeth a-poppin!

Hi all! I made it through surgery with flying colors! Thank you all for your praters & posts! Feeling better today, and going back tomorrow to remove the packing from my nose. I hope to find out about the biopsy in a few days.
Question- I am having dental problems due to the radiation. I had a wisdom tooth pulled, and went into surgery with another tooth sensitive to cold, which means I see a root canal, or another extraction in my future. Has anyone had implants done? I am not a fan of a denture or bridge, and would like NOT to be toothless! Lol! Just would appreciate if anyone has had experience with these different dental options? Thank you!
Ahhh...yes, the gift that keeps on giving! Hee hee!
Blessings, Patty - who needs her teeth to get Fatty

Good to hear your doing some color flying, praying it continues

i have had 6 teeth removed post treatment. i have been told implants are not an option, there is to much risk of infection into the bone. necrosis to the bone could lead to having the infected bone having to be removed.

clean those teeth all the time, it's a must. another of those gifts.

S Hi, I just read your post, and yes I have had 3 implants. If you can afford it, because it is very costly, I sure would have implants! Nothing like them. I am going to have 2 implants done sometime this year. So like I said, you have the money go right ahead!!! Sue

    Ha ha ha JG!
Thanks - just hope this is NOT my nose & mostly swelling! A resident removed (yanked) the packing out today, and ouch - that smarted! My blood pressure dropped to danger level, and it was not a fun time. I was glad to get home , back in my jammies, and cozy!

Glad you did well on your check up - hope they gave you a free toothbrush! Lol! I haven't had any cavities, and go for my cleanings, but the dry mouth, and large old fillings in back teeth aren't helping.

I guess I will cross that "bridge" when I get to it! ;)

    UGH!
Sorry to hear that John - 6 huh? I am well on my way. Yes I could see why implants might not be an option. It makes sense. Thanks for the post, and prayers are much appreciated. Should have biopsy results soon.

    Hi Sue
I will check into it down the road. It sounds like you are quite happy with them. I will not jump the gun and stay positive, but it is good to know it has worked for you. I will check with my specialist and see if they are an option in my case. Right now, I just need to heal, and hope the tooth does not act up more than it has now. Thanks so much for the post. God bless you!

    Caution
Please be sure you have a dentist/oral surgeon that is knowledgable about radionucrosis. I had two jaw teeth come loose 4 years after treatment because the radiation killed the blood cells in the bone. Had hyperbaric chamber treatments to restore cirrculation. Oral surgeon advised me no implants due to bone damage.

    Curious about the implants
I don't think the rules have been established as I had an ENT tell me at a hyperbaric presentation that HNC folks with hyperbaric treatments have been shown to tolerate implants better than the non hyperbaric treated population. I think if you want implants and can affords it someone will do the procedure. I suspect many of the dentists out there are just rattling off what they perceive to be the right answer.

    addition
i forgot to add, my dentist's and oral surgeons see alot of head & neck cancer survivors of the radiation. this is at University of Indiana school of dentistry in Indy. they actually sit on the tumor clinic team with the ent's, oncologists and others. not all end and oncologists have this advantage and experience.

i guess what i am saying is just make sure you have done your research thru experienced dentist and oral surgeons. it's all about risk reward. I am sure i could find someone that would do implants.

    Implant's
Dental implant's are done here at our cancer center in Ontario! I know of someone who had their dentures converted to implant dentures because of bone loss & ill fitting dentures after radiation treatment. The cost to convert was $15,000 . My girlfriend had veneer's done by her dental surgeon & the cost was $32,000. it is not covered by insurance here as it is considered cosmetic. I am not sure on the price of each one done individually! Your dentist would know of a surgeon & would refer!
