SCLC-Need Quick Advice

My 88-year old dad was just diagnosed with sclc by biopsy. No MRI or PT scan yet, so we're not sure if it's limited or extensive. His doctor thinks it's in one lung and lymph nodes, but not sure, and pushing for immediate chemo. My dad is sole caregiver for my handicapped mom. They live alone in another state. I've always stayed with them for extended periods when needed for surgeries, etc., but my husband was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in July and is undergoing chemotherapy.

Based on my husband's experience with carboplatin, I'm worried about my dad being able to take care of my mom if he decides to have chemo. I don't know how someone his age does with chemo, esp. carboplatin.

Does anyone have any info/advice/experience that may help us decide what to do? I'm going to visit them next week, for a week, between 2 of my husband's treatments. I'm at a total loss and having a hard time dealing with everything at one time. Don't know if I need to get them into a long-term care facility, find out if in-home care is available (only possible if covered by insurance)...I don't know where to start or what advice to give my dad.

Thanks for any help.

Please go to Inspire there are many lung cancer suvivors there who have under went all types of tx. There are all the stages and limited and extensive small cell discussion groups. I use Inspire as I had non small cell. I don't have any answers for you, but I think on that web site they will. Also Cancergrace is a web site where drs answer questions. I hope someone on this site will help you. I wish you well and please take care of yourself. Lori

    use your dad's hospital resources
Most importantly, their social worker. He/she already has resources lined up and access to groups in your area that want to reach out to help. Often they know how to cut through the red tape that surrounds insurance plans and government regulations. My social worker saved me much time and shielded me from a lot of frustration.
