Thyroid update

Just a brief update. I started my chemo last Wednesday and so far have not experinced any of the nast side effects that I have read about. I had the normal fatigue and a bit of coating on my tongue and throat, but I have been able to eat pretty much anything and everything. I am thinking I might gain weight on chemo!

The day I started chemo I met with my oncolocist's nurse practiioner and she said that the dr was happy with the results of the PET scan. Then later that afternoon she called to say that he wanted an ultrasound done to check the thyroid nodule that had lit up a bit on the PET scan just to be thorough. Well I had the ultrasound on Monday and apparently it jived with the PET scan so now I have to have a biopsy next Tuesday to rule out a malignancy. Just when I was trying to be positive about getting through the chemo, now I am once again faced with another week of worrying and the unknown. I was also getting used to the fact that my last chemo would be the day before Thanksgiving, but now I'm trying to get a handle on how this thyroid thing would change everything. Ugh! I guess the best case scenario would be that it was tyroid cancer independent of the breast cancer and then they could take out the thyroid. Not sure what to think or how to remain positive. I have never heard of breast cancer going only to the thyroid...

Glad chemo is not treating you too badly
Sounds like so far your chemo SEs are doable. Weight gain during chemo actually was a concern for me, the steroids made me really hungry.

I will pray that your thyroid nodule is not cancerous. Sorry you are going through this waiting and worrying.

I am sending you positive thoughts and prayers,

Penny .. I don't want to jump the gun here and provide all
sorts of information .. but, please know that I am a thyroid cancer Survivor. I had thyroid cancer, major surgery then radiation along with radium. I've been on a synthetic thyroid med for about 20 years. I was told that I would go thru early onset menopause -- never happened.

So if you do indeed have thyroid cancer --- I am sure concentration will be placed on completed chemo --. Surgery will be scheduled to removed your thyroid, and maybe radiation.

20 years ago -- 3 specialist told me that 'thyroid cancer' is a 'self containing' cancer meaning very rarely does it spread to any other organs -- occasionally it does migrate to the voice box. Please confer with a Specialist ... my information, and experience is 20 years old.

Positive thoughts, Gentle hugs and Prayers.

Vicki Sam, are we or are we
Vicki Sam, are we or are we not related? Well, of course we are!

My older brother also had thyroid cancer and it has now been 30+ years and he is fine. He also had major surgery and has been on synthroid ever since.

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and have been on synthroid since 1983. I have to be followed closely, but am fine. Wendy (California sister) is also on synthroid.

Penny, I am praying that it is NOT thyroid cancer, but, if it is, know that many do very well after thyroid cancer.

    Thyroid cancer
Hi There. I am too a thyroid cancer survivor...I was first diagnosed 2 yrs ago and had a total thyroidectomy. Then earlier this year (right when my breast cancer was being diagnosed) they found that the thyroid cancer came back and was in a lymph node.

Just FYI...the two Dr's talked to decide which cancer was to be dealt with first. Hands down, the breast cancer treatment will far outway the thyroid cancer. In general, thyroid cancer is an extremely slow growing cancer, and highly treatable...something like 98% cure rate...so if it does turn out to be cancer...and I'm hoping that it isn't, it is something you can get through...I didn't have chemo, but my sister did...the thryoid surgery and treatment are far easier than chemo/rads...

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me...I've become an expert...

Myself and 2 sisters have had breast cancer, one of those sisters also had thyroid cancer...and both of her sons...plus another sister has had thryoid cancer.
So, we have invested a lot of time researching and learning about this disease.

If I can be of any help to just calm your nerves, please let me know...

By the way, the Dr I deal with said there is no way breast ca can go to the thyroid - breast cancer has never gone to the thryoid that he has ever seen...so it's not likely.

    Take care, best of luck,
