Cat's Claw advice

Hello All,

I take all the usual vitamins, but I have never taken any herbs.
Does any on this site take Cat's Claw, and would you have any
information on this herb?

A friend of mine is recovering from stage 2 aggressive breast cancer.
She will be starting Cat's Claw very shortly. I realize I must ask
my oncologist first about this herb. My oncologist has no problem
with the supplements I take.

Any help would be appreciated. Love Maggie

    Hi Maggie,
I haven't taken this but here is a little info I read about it today. All I take is my over-fifty multi vitamin-Calcium pill and Vitamin C. Be sure to talk to your doctor first.

Cat's Claw, an immune-boosting herbal supplement:
Where does Cat's Claw come from?
Western researchers have studied Cat's Claw since the 1970's and European doctors have used this herb since the 1980's.

The name is derived from two curved thorns at the base of the plant's leaves that resemble a cat's claws.

There are dozens of related Cat's Claw species, but two specific ones are harvested in Peru and Brazil for use as herbal remedies.

Native Indians have long used the bark to make tea to treat wounds, stomach ailments and arthritis.

How can Cat's Claw help me?
Scientific studies have identified several active ingredients that enhance activity of the immune system and inhibit inflammation.

Anti-viral, anti-microbial and anti-tumor properties have been attributed to Cat's Claw.

Cat's Claw has anti-inflammatory effects that have proven to be beneficial in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, gout and bursitis.

Used as an anti-oxidant, Cat's Claw helps to protect cell from damage caused by free radicals.

German and Austrian doctors prescribe Cat's Claw to stimulate the immune systems of cancer patients that have been weakened by chemotherapy.

Studies conducted on animals have shown that Cat's Claw roots and bark contain compounds called procyanidolic oligomers (PCO's), which inhibit tumours.

Other compounds identified in this herbal medicine stimulate immune cells called phagocytes which "devour" viruses and other disease-causing organisms.

Cat's Claw has been successfully used to combat sinus infections as well as other upper respiratory-tract infections.

Cat's Claw can be used to treat viral infections such as herpes and can also be used by HIV positive patients to boost their immune systems.

Recently, scientists have been researching the use of Cat's Claw to treat Alzheimer's.

Cat's Claw is prescribed by health practitioners to cleanse the intestinal tract, thereby assisting patients suffering from many different stomach and bowel disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, leaky bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, gastritis, ulcers and even Crohn's disease.

If I am already on medicine, what are the interactions or side-effects I need to know about when using Cat's Claw?
Please consult your medical practitioner prior to using any herbal medications should you be under their care.

No known side effects have been reported when using Cat's Claw at the recommended dosages.

People who use higher doses than recommended have reported nausea and headaches and using high doses over extended periods can adversely affect your immune system.

Pregnant women and women who are trying to get pregnant should not use Cat's Claw under any circumstance as this herbal remedy was once used to prevent pregnancy and to abort pregnancies.

    Got one better...
    Hey John,
I got one better for you. My granddaughter Chelsie stopped by this morning with a Latte, so I asked her if she wanted to ride with me to the pharmacy..(Walgreens). We got there and she said.."what do you need to get"? I read her my list...anacin-heat wraps-new heating pad-and stronger reading glasses..(need 275's now instead of 250's). Anyways...we get to the check out and as the young cashier is ringing up my stuff, Chelsie says.."geez gramma, everything here is for old people". The young cashier kind of giggled, so I said to both of them.."laugh now girls, but your day is coming..we all get old eventually". The cashier looked at Chelsie and said..(with a serious look).."well...she's not "that" old yet, she didn't buy any of those old peoples diapers". We all broke out laughing and as we left the store Chelsie said.."don't worry gramma, when you do have to buy those diapers, I'll still go shopping with you".I laughed and said.."will you change them for me also"? Without hesitation she said.."of course I will". She will be 21 in September and never fails to make me laugh. Sue

    Funny
    Sue,
It is so funny when we tell those stories, but when we are by ourselves and thinking about it,,,Well it doesn't seem as funny anymore. I can remember what seems like yesterday and having to wait behind older people at the store buying their Geritol and such. I would think I will never get that old. The jokes on me LOL. John

    I know...
Awww yes...I have those quiet moments also when I think to myself..."good grief..I didn't see this coming"! The wrinkles, sagging butt, knees, chest and ohhh, the achey joints...Ugh! But...with that being said, my 2 older grandkids do have a way of making me feel young at heart. Sue (FNHL-2-3A-6/10)

    Just had to add
    Hi Sue and John,

    Just had to add this.

My grandson, will be 15 at the end of November. Starting high school in Aug.

I always tell him that I'm not an old Nana, but a young one.

He said to me," Nana you're not old at all, most of my friends parents are older than you."

He is right, there are so many that are older than me, some are old enough to be my PARENT!

Now thats just to old to have a teenager.

    just to laugh
    Dear Sue,

Your post brought a great big smile to my face. Gee Whiz, will I live long
    enough to wear diapers? Hopefully.

You know what my biggest fear is, not wearing diapers, but ending up in
a nursing home. Enough of that thought.

My family and friends keep me alive, and I have a long long time to end up in
    a nursing home.

    Love Maggie
