Just over 3 years ago I was diagnosed with an 11cm renal cell carcinoma; had a radical nephrectomy - (12" incision, rib removed etc) still have discomfort from surgery with neuromas, scar tissue and adhesian but thought I was doing ok until I noticed a lump on my thryoid; as I didn't feel unwell I ignored it for a few months until finally went to endocrinologist who advise biopsy; biopsy unsuccessful as not enough material was obtained for a diagnosis, eventually had a thyroidectomy and was stunned to receive news 2 weeks later that there was renal cell carcinoma in the thyroid! My oncologist is now sending me for ct scans every 2 months to monitor small lesions in my other kidney. Have had no drug treatment - sunitinib has been mentioned if lesions advance - any comments.
PS I LIve in Australia and have found it very hard to find any kidney cancer survivors locally although there must be some!

    kidney cancer mets to thyroid
Hi, just wanted to respond to your post. I too have been diagnosed with mets to my thyroid. They are going to take it out soon. I am a little scared because I have had no spread since my surgery on 9/2010. I was curious about your treatments and how you are doing.I will keep you posted about my treatments and perhaps we can compare notes. I still am very concerned and worried about losing my thyroid. I also have had another kidney spot found on my other kidney. I am still awaiting doctors opinion on what to do about this.

I now have. A enlarged goiter
Hey smurfin, I think we replied to each other once! I too had renal cell cancer 3 years ago! Had a partial, and everything looked good. Until I had a cat scan that showed an enlarged thyroid. The goiter has grown 3x is original size, and now My local dr. Wants a new thyroid biopsy. I am going to try and see if I can have Sloan Kettering see me for this biopsy. Please keep me posted as per condition. Wishing you the best, and where do you go for your treatments, best wishes anne

    Mets in Thyroid
Dear Anne I hope you are going to an endocrine specialist. I got lucky because I was the one to ask about a lung scan, which found the tumor on my Thyroid. Still not sure if it's kidney cancer, wont know until the operation. Funny I'm hoping it's Thyroid cancer.Strange huh. That would mean I'm not metatstatic. Don't mess around with your Thyroid. You can live without it. I was going to Mayo but now I go to the University of Wisconsin hospital. Just as good, or so it seems. Much closer so that's good. Good to hear from you. Take care and keep in touch. Steve

    Ok
Ok, all is well, saw the top head, neck dr. At Sloan Kettering, they did biopsy same day at consult, amazing service, two dr. Came in with microscopes, they took 3 samples, and they were able to tell dr. Singh no apparent cancer, more expensive slides done, all ok. But the goiter is so big, 1 node is 4 inches x 3" alone, he recommend complete thyroidectomy, or wait and watch. I said wait and watch! It's been a long three years, I had complications after partial. Had 8 stents, lazier treatments after partial. I had a hemlock embed in my urethra, ( it's a plug they use during surgery) it got loose and embedded in my urethra. When is your surgery Steve, and let me know how the recovery went. Hoping it's not any type of cancer! Good luck Steve, and Hang tuff!!! Best wishes anne

    Kidney cancer and thyroid
I’m a 50 year old male, radical nephrectomy Dec. 2010 with a 10cm Chromophobe RCC.

During a chest X-ray last week it was discovered that I had "Tracheal displacement to the right" and an "asymmetric clavicle". After sever CT scans the diagnosis is a “multi-node goiter” that is starting to block my trachea and an trachelectomy is needed. It turns out the “goiter” is starting to block my trachea so I will need to have it removed. In addition I was found to have “hyperthyroid”.

I will not find out if my Thyroid issues are cancer until after my surgery ( hopefully) at the end of this month. I still am a bit concerned.

While my urologist never suggested that Thyroid cancer was common after RCC, I have read several items on the internet that this does occur. I meet with an endocrinologist on Friday and a surgeon next week to discuss the surgery and possibilities.

I have read that it is extremely rare for a hyperthyroid to be cancer. Did anyone in this group have hyperthyroid and thyroid cancer after RCC? I’m going to cross-post this on the Thyroid cancer group…
